So. I'm not around here much. Studying and working ate up most of my time, and all my writing was for my thesis, so not much to contribute. I resubmit my corrections tomorrow but I'm probably not likely to come back except for the occasional breeze through. What I have done, however, is start a podcast, so now you can find me and my co-creator spouting geeky nonsense on iTunes and Patreon. Sometime in the nearish future we're going to launch a very dark steampunk drama as well, but you can keep up with all of that at our joint Twitter, @geeknerdpod and/or mine, @leksikality.

The anniversary of Alliterati's international launch is fast approaching, and we've decided to throw one more twist into the mix to commemorate it. From now until 23 November, we're accepting flash submissions to be included in Issue 13 (released 1 December). But there's a catch: your submissions must be in response to a piece previously featured in one of our issues.

Guidelines and Requirements

  • Submissions should be sent to editor@alliteratimagazine.com with the subject "Flash Submission".
  • Include a short bio (100 words) in the body of your email.
  • The file name should include your name and the title of your work.
  • Specify which piece you are responding to in the body of your email (if you choose your own from previous issues, please provide the issue and page number of the piece). Also, tell us what inspired you about the piece you chose.
  • Prose should be no more than 1000 words; poetry no more than 20 lines.
  • Images must be 300 dpi and minimum of 1200x1200 pixels
  • Must be received by midnight GMT, 23 November.

Response Prompts

Russell Mountford, #5 / Dec 2011
Poem by angeljunkie

"Divination as a Means of Finding a Way Back", Jes Malitoris (#9 / Dec 2012)

And out of the horizon in my mind
comes the memory of how I began this poem thinking of
my fear of childbirth, of the nightmare I had when I was
sixteen about telling some future-husband I wanted a divorce.
And how I wish I had been re-born instead as the Thunderbird,
spending my life carrying updrafts of hot air against the
ocean breezes, a spirit of all colors, calling out with booming
thunder-voice. Still,

I watch from the earth, with electricity
trembling in my fingertips, and a heartbeat that rocks my
whole body, rising to meet the lightning on my wings of rain.

'Man is not what he thinks he is;

he is what he hides.'

― André Malraux

Everyone lies, from little omissions of fact to harmless white lies to full-on deception. We lie to strangers,
friends and family, ourselves. Sometimes we don't even know we're doing it. These lies become secrets
which eventually become a sort of truth all on their own. We may not even be aware there is a secret
there, but it affects us, shapes us, determines events and outcomes far down the line from when the
initial thing came into being.

'[M]ost people would never know them, but they know there are spaces,
gaps where the answers should be, where someone should have sat,
where someone used to be. A name that is never uttered,
or uttered just once and never again.
We all have our secrets.'
― Cecelia Ahern

Write about a secret that someone has that dramatically affects someone else's life. The secret itself can be positive or negative; the effect can be positive or negative. You can mix it up - a secret kept with good intentions that negatively impacts the other person. An unintentional secret. Family secrets. Secrets between friends. Maybe the people don't know each other at all. How is the secret kept? Why is the secret kept? Does the end result turn into its own secret? Be creative. Play with it.

'The Universe doesn't like secrets. It conspires to reveal the truth, to lead you to it.' ― Lisa Unger

I rarely post journals about anything other than events happening, so I'm just going to give in and make it official. If you have things you want people to spread the word on, send me a note and I'll generally put it up. Otherwise you'll just have to rely on me finding things.
